Iran has intensified the construction of a protective wall along its eastern border with Afghanistan. The goal of this large-scale project is to prevent illegal border crossings, combat drug trafficking, and intercept arms smuggling. According to authorities, the wall will span hundreds of kilometers, and a significant portion is already completed. Iranian engineers and military units are involved in the construction, which is progressing rapidly.

The wall will be equipped with modern surveillance and security systems, including CCTV cameras, motion sensors, thermal detectors, and patrol posts. In some areas, barbed wire and barricades will be installed to prevent vehicle and pedestrian intrusions. Special attention is being paid to mountainous and desert regions that are difficult to access.

Iranian officials emphasize that the decision to build the barrier was made in response to a sharp increase in threats coming from Afghan territory after the rise of the new regime. Iranian law enforcement agencies report a rise in illegal border crossings and smuggling activity. Reports indicate that not only migrants but also individuals linked to organized crime, drug cartels, and armed groups are entering the country.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the barrier will help significantly reduce crime rates in Iran's eastern provinces bordering Afghanistan. The government sees the project as part of a broader national security strategy aimed at strengthening borders and reducing vulnerability to external threats.

The construction of the wall also has economic and social implications. Authorities claim that illegal migrant flows put pressure on domestic resources, including the labor market, healthcare system, and infrastructure. Strengthening the border is seen as a step toward stabilizing the internal situation and protecting the local population from the consequences of uncontrolled migration.

Iranian authorities are also concerned about the infiltration of extremist elements. Following the regime change in Afghanistan, incidents involving militants and illegal weapons have increased. Tehran has repeatedly stressed the need to protect the country's territory from such risks, stating that the construction of the wall is a necessary measure under current regional instability.

In some areas, the barrier's construction includes auxiliary infrastructure—roads, observation posts, support bases, and communication nodes. These measures will enable round-the-clock monitoring and rapid response in the event of border violations. The wall will also serve as part of a coordination system among Iran’s military, border guards, and security forces.

Officials state that construction will accelerate in the coming months with the involvement of additional resources. The project’s strategic importance is underscored by strong political support and attention from the country’s top leadership. Despite challenges related to terrain and climate, the wall is expected to be completed as quickly as possible.

Iran has previously attempted to secure its borders, but this wall is the largest of its kind. It is designed not only for physical protection but also to create a long-term security architecture covering the entire eastern border. Upon completion, the wall is expected to significantly reduce illegal migration and smuggling-related crimes.
