The Israeli army plans to establish a safe corridor in Gaza and temporarily ceasefire to free Edan Alexander, a US-Israeli citizen held by a Palestinian group. Israeli media confirmed the information on May 12. According to KAN, Israeli forces will halt airstrikes and ensure the safety of the route from 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT). Channel 12 also reported the decision.

A representative of Hamas' military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida, confirmed the organization's agreement to release Alexander. He stated this decision was made during negotiations with US representatives. The release is scheduled for May 12, 2025. Anadolu reporters confirmed there were no airstrikes or artillery shelling in Gaza on Monday morning.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office emphasized that the release was not connected to any concessions or exchanges by Israel. It stated that only military pressure influenced Hamas' decision. Hamas, in turn, said the move resulted from negotiations with US and international mediators.

US President Donald Trump called the release of Edan Alexander a “gesture of goodwill” from Hamas towards the US and regional mediators. He expressed hope that this step could become a crucial move toward ending the fighting in Gaza. According to Trump, a potential ceasefire and reopening of border crossings for humanitarian aid could follow.

Edan Alexander served in an elite infantry unit on the Gaza border and was the last American citizen held captive. Hamas expressed hope that the hostage’s release would lead to broader agreements on a ceasefire and humanitarian access.

The release coincides with US President Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. His schedule does not include a visit to Israel. International media speculate on tensions between Trump and Netanyahu, noting their direct communication has reportedly ceased.

According to the latest data, over 52,800 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, many of them women and children. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel is also under investigation at the International Court of Justice for alleged genocide.
