Erdoğan ready again to mediate between Putin and Zelensky
Istanbul may become the venue for new peace talks. Donald Trump also joined the initiative, expressing his readiness to help end the conflict.
Turkey has once again found itself at the center of international diplomatic efforts. The country's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, expressed his willingness to mediate between Russia and Ukraine if negotiations begin. Earlier, in 2022, Ankara helped broker the grain deal between the warring parties. Now Turkey is again being considered as a potential neutral platform for high-level negotiations.
A signal of Russia’s readiness for dialogue came on the night of May 10–11. Russian President Vladimir Putin, at an emergency briefing in the Kremlin, proposed launching negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions on May 15 in Istanbul. The proposal was made in the presence of international journalists and caused significant global resonance.
A response also came from former U.S. President Donald Trump. In a statement on his social network Truth, he said he was ready to work with both Russia and Ukraine to reach a peace agreement. According to him, ending the conflict is a matter of days, not weeks. Trump called it a “potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine” and added that ending the hostilities would save hundreds of thousands of lives.
Trump also suggested the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough in the coming days. He noted that the upcoming week could be “big” in terms of resolving the crisis and creating a roadmap for peace.
Thus, three parallel signals are forming. Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially proposed negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed his readiness to mediate. Donald Trump expressed his intention to assist the process as a potential international mediator.
Observers note that if Ukraine agrees to participate in the negotiations, this could become the most significant diplomatic event in recent years. Holding the meeting in Istanbul under Turkey’s mediation would be seen as a historic step toward halting the protracted conflict.
So far, there has been no official response from Kyiv to Putin's proposal. It is expected that Ukrainian leaders will hold consultations with allies in the coming days and decide on possible formats of participation in the negotiation process.
If Ukraine refuses, experts do not rule out that Russia may again declare its readiness for dialogue and accuse Ukraine of rejecting negotiations. Such rhetoric has already been used in previous stages of diplomatic confrontation.
International organizations and several world leaders continue to call on the parties to exercise restraint and seek peaceful solutions. It is expected that the development of the situation will be discussed at the UN and in consultations of leading powers in the coming days.
