Israeli App AppCloud Suspected of Spying Through Samsung Smartphones
According to human rights organizations and technology analysts, Samsung smartphones sold in the Middle East and North Africa have been found to contain a pre-installed application called AppCloud, developed by the Israeli company ironSource. Researchers claim the program collects user data and transmits it to third parties without the owners’ consent.
AppCloud cannot be removed using standard tools. Deactivation requires root access, leaving most users vulnerable. Experts note that the app can track user activity, IP address, geolocation, a list of installed applications, and their frequency of use. The developer’s privacy policy lacks clear details about the scope and purpose of data processing.
The digital rights organization SMEX stated that AppCloud is pre-installed on Samsung A and M series models sold in Arab countries. According to their information, data from devices may be stored and processed on servers located outside the region. Analysts emphasize that such practices violate transparency principles and pose a serious threat to the privacy of millions of users.
Several countries in the region have launched investigations into device suppliers and companies responsible for installing AppCloud. Experts warn that the widespread integration of such software solutions could be used to create surveillance infrastructure, potentially serving the interests of foreign entities.
Technology specialists note that users are often unaware of the hidden capabilities of pre-installed apps, which receive system permissions without notifying the device owner. This creates a risk of unauthorized access to personal data, including photos, messages, and biometric information.
Samsung has not yet issued an official statement in response to the allegations. However, the investigation has already attracted attention from international organizations demanding transparency and accountability in digital security and personal data protection.
