Netanyahu and Macron Clash Over Palestine in Public War of Words
The French leader supported the idea of recognizing a Palestinian state. Netanyahu responded with accusations of double standards and criticism of France’s policy in Corsica and New Caledonia.
Diplomatic tensions between France and Israel are escalating. The conflict stems from statements made by French President Emmanuel Macron in support of recognizing an independent Palestinian state. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes—lashed out at the French leader.
“Macron is deeply mistaken in continuing to promote the idea of a Palestinian state in the heart of our homeland. We will not jeopardize our existence over illusions far from reality,” Netanyahu declared, reacting to Paris’s diplomatic position.
He also accused France of hypocrisy:
“We will not accept moral lectures from those who oppose independence for Corsica and New Caledonia. They mistakenly urge us to create a Palestinian state.”
Macron’s response was swift and equally sharp. In a closed conversation with Netanyahu, which was later leaked to the media, the French president reportedly said:
“Don’t lecture us on morality.”
This exchange of words publicly exposed the deterioration of relations between the two countries. It comes amid growing international pressure on Israel and rising support for Palestine in Europe and around the world.
Tensions were further inflamed by a recent scandal: despite an active arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, Netanyahu flew through French airspace en route to the U.S. without facing legal or political obstacles from Paris. Legal experts have accused France of violating international obligations and aiding evasion of justice.
Meanwhile, France is taking an increasingly independent stance on the Palestinian issue and is actively discussing with allies the possibility of officially recognizing Palestine as a state.
