Nintendo Launches Marketing Campaign for Switch 2 in Japan
Billboards appear in Tokyo as the company prepares for the console's wide release on June 5.
Nintendo has kicked off a marketing campaign in Japan to promote the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2. The first billboards featuring the device, its logo, the release date, and a screenshot from Mario Kart World have appeared on the streets of Tokyo. It is expected that the advertising effort will soon expand to other regions of the country.
At launch, Nintendo is focusing on two major projects: Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. Interest in the new console has been high in Japan even before full-scale advertising began. A clear sign of this was the surge in demand for MicroSD Express memory cards, which officially confirmed compatibility with the new platform.
According to Hermitage Akihabara, MicroSD Express cards were selling rapidly both in physical stores and online. On average, about 337 cards were sold per hour. Over 80% of customers bought one card, while the rest purchased two or three. Retail representatives admitted they did not anticipate such a high level of demand, even with large inventories.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025. The console is expected to be one of the key gaming device launches of the year, offering improved performance, new features, and support for an expanded set of games with enhanced graphics and network capabilities.
Nintendo anticipates high demand both in Japan and internationally. It is expected that Switch 2 will continue the success of its predecessor, which sold over 130 million units worldwide.
The marketing campaign includes outdoor advertising, promotional activities in electronics stores, and announcements through digital platforms. A series of special events and presentations showcasing the console’s features are also expected soon.
Nintendo’s strategy aims to ensure a strong launch, consolidate its position in the domestic market, and lay the groundwork for future international expansion.
