US LNG Imports to China Completely Halt Amid Trade War
The last tanker arrived in China in February. Deliveries have been frozen due to escalating tensions.
Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to China have completely stopped since early February 2025, according to the Financial Times, citing shipping data. The last LNG tanker, with a capacity of 69,000 tons, departed from Corpus Christi, Texas, and arrived in China's Fujian province on February 6. No further deliveries have been recorded since then.
The complete halt in deliveries comes amid a sharp escalation in the trade war between the two countries. This is not the first time: during Donald Trump's first presidential term, American LNG exports to China were also frozen for over a year.
In 2024, the US accounted for only 6% of China's total LNG imports. Nevertheless, Chinese companies PetroChina and Sinopec had previously signed 13 long-term contracts with American producers, some extending until 2049. These agreements were crucial for financing new LNG terminal projects in the US and Mexico, worth billions of dollars.
The complete suspension of deliveries jeopardizes the fulfillment of these contracts and adds further instability to global energy trade. China, the world's largest LNG consumer, will seek alternative supply routes, while the US may redirect exports to Europe and other markets.
The halt reflects the growing political tensions between the world’s two largest economies, raising the risk of further escalation in other sectors of trade and investment.
