Participants in Sabotage in Iran Named — Most Tied to Mossad and Are Afghans
According to Iranian authorities, most of the Mossad agents involved in the power plant sabotage are Afghans who fled to Iran after the U.S. troop withdrawal. They were reportedly offered around $250 for participating in the attack.
Iranian officials have reported that the majority of those suspected in organizing the explosion at one of the country’s power plants are Afghan nationals. According to reports, the detainees were recruited by Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad and participated in a sabotage operation on Iranian territory. The payment offered for completing the mission, they claimed, was about 20 million Iranian tomans, equivalent to approximately 225–250 U.S. dollars.
Investigations revealed that many of the suspects had previously resided in Afghanistan and crossed into Iran following the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2021. Among them are individuals who had collaborated with American military and intelligence structures during the coalition presence. After the Taliban’s rise to power, these individuals sought refuge in neighboring Iran.
Iranian sources stated that the detainees were used as operatives tasked with targeting critical infrastructure. Specifically, the case involves an explosion at a facility within the energy complex. Law enforcement representatives noted that the suspects underwent training and acted according to a pre-planned scenario.
The investigation further found that recruitment was conducted through intermediaries operating under the cover of charitable and logistics organizations. It is believed the organizers exploited the vulnerable condition of Afghan migrants by offering minimal payments in exchange for participation in the operation. Evidence of connections to Israeli intelligence is reportedly supported by technical means and detainee testimonies.
Iranian authorities claim these acts are part of a broader campaign aimed at destabilizing the country and damaging vital sectors of its economy. The energy infrastructure is considered a strategic target. Following the incident, security measures were increased in the region, and special surveillance protocols were enacted at energy and industrial sites.
International reaction to Tehran’s statements has so far been limited. The Israeli side has not commented on the accusations. Observers note that the use of migration flows and vulnerable population groups as tools of external influence is becoming a growing concern for international organizations.
