The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has decided to disband itself and cease armed struggle against Turkey. This was reported by the Rudaw TV channel, citing the results of the organization's 12th congress, which was held from May 5 to 7 under heightened security measures. PKK leadership stated that the party had completed its historical mission and is transitioning to peaceful forms of activity.

The official PKK statement said that over the years, the organization has “broken the policy of denial and destruction” of the Kurdish people and brought the Kurdish issue closer to a solution within democratic processes. The party expressed confidence that the decision would be supported by the Kurdish population and called on the international community to promote further peaceful initiatives.

The congress emphasized that the PKK's future activities will be based solely on political and non-violent methods. Party representatives noted that the decision to end armed struggle resulted from a thorough analysis of the current situation and a desire to prevent further casualties and escalation of the conflict.

The PKK leadership also appealed to the Turkish authorities. The statement calls for legal and political guarantees for the party's leader Abdullah Öcalan, who has been serving a life sentence in a Turkish prison since 1999. According to the congress participants, ensuring Öcalan's rights and safety is a key step toward a final resolution of the issue and achieving stable peace in the region.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party has long been one of the key armed forces advocating for the rights of the Kurdish population in Turkey and neighboring countries. The organization has been designated a terrorist group by several countries, including Turkey, the US, and EU states. However, the PKK has also maintained dialogue with some international bodies and human rights organizations.

International observers assess the PKK's decision as a potentially significant step toward long-term stabilization in the region. The move from armed struggle to political methods may create conditions for a new phase of negotiations between the Turkish authorities and representatives of the Kurdish movement.

Several experts call on the international community to closely monitor developments and support peaceful initiatives. They also emphasize the need for international guarantees to ensure the safety of participants in the peace process and to prevent a possible resumption of violence.

The PKK's decision to disband could change the balance of power in the region and influence domestic political processes in Turkey. The next steps of both sides will largely determine the prospects for resolving the Kurdish issue within democratic and legal frameworks.
