South Korea and Poland are in the final stages of preparing a large-scale defense contract involving the delivery of 180 K2 tanks worth about $6 billion. This was confirmed on Tuesday when the main parameters of the deal were announced. The contract will become one of the largest military cooperation agreements between the two countries and aims to significantly enhance Poland’s defense capabilities.

According to the agreement, 117 tanks will be manufactured in South Korea by Hyundai Rotem. The remaining tanks will be assembled in Poland, where the state-owned Polish Armaments Group will oversee production. This approach is expected to accelerate contract implementation, reduce logistics costs, and ensure the involvement of Polish industry in the manufacturing cycle. The distribution of production aligns with Warsaw’s goals of deepening localization and strengthening its national defense-industrial base.

The K2 Black Panther is South Korea’s main battle tank, known for its mobility, protection, and digital control systems. Poland previously acquired tanks of this model during initial deliveries, after which a decision was made to expand the procurement to modernize the country’s armed forces. The new contract is a logical continuation of the earlier technical and manufacturing partnership.

Amid rising regional tensions, Warsaw is increasing defense spending and actively building defense ties with foreign partners, particularly with South Korea. Seoul, in turn, is expanding its presence in the European arms market and views Poland as a key strategic partner in the region. As part of Poland’s broader military modernization program, previous deals were signed with South Korea for the delivery of K9 self-propelled howitzers and multiple rocket launch systems.

The signing of the K2 tank contract will mark a significant milestone in bilateral relations. Beyond its military importance, the deal includes joint technology development, knowledge transfer, and possible expansion of production in Poland. It also paves the way for additional investment in Poland’s defense sector and the creation of new jobs.

Tank deliveries are expected to begin shortly, with the two-country production model ensuring a stable and timely schedule. Officials from both sides view the agreement as a mutually beneficial initiative that will strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities and promote high-tech collaboration. Final negotiations and the signing of the documents are anticipated in the coming weeks.
