Pope Francis Has Died: How He Will Be Remembered in History
The pontiff passed away at the age of 89, leaving a profound mark on the history of the Catholic Church.
The Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis at the age of 89. The pontiff was hospitalized in February 2025 with a respiratory infection, later diagnosed as bilateral pneumonia. Despite doctors' efforts, he could not be saved.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires in 1936 to a family of Italian immigrants. After earning a chemistry degree, he chose the spiritual path and joined the Jesuit order. He taught philosophy and theology and was fluent in Spanish, Italian, and German. In his youth, he worked as a bouncer and janitor. In 2013, he was elected Pope, becoming the first pontiff from the New World and the first Jesuit to sit on the Holy See.
Francis is remembered for his humility, reformist spirit, and efforts to bring the Church closer to the people. He preached reconciliation, washed the feet of prisoners, promoted interfaith dialogue, condemned capital punishment and corruption. He allowed blessings for same-sex couples and softened the approach to including LGBT individuals in church life, while maintaining traditional views on marriage.
He was the first Pope in history to participate in a G7 summit, undertook a penitential pilgrimage to Canada, and apologized to Indigenous peoples for the Church’s past crimes. During the pandemic, he held Mass alone in the rain at an empty St. Peter’s Square. After the conflict in Ukraine began, he made a symbolic gesture by visiting the Russian embassy and consecrating Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Pope Francis was known for his sense of humor, refused to watch television or use a mobile phone, but actively used social media to connect with believers. His love for football and loyalty to the "San Lorenzo" club became part of his public image. Francis leaves behind a profound legacy as a spiritual leader who sought to renew the Church and bring it closer to modern society.
