On the night of August 29, 2025, a devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. The epicenter was located in the Jalalabad area, just 20 kilometers from the border with Pakistan. The tremor, with a magnitude of 6.0, was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey at 2:14 a.m. local time.

According to local authorities and humanitarian organizations, at least 250 people were killed and more than 500 were injured to varying degrees. The death toll may rise as rescue operations continue and people may still be trapped under the rubble. The hardest-hit areas were villages in mountainous regions, where many homes built of clay collapsed under the strong tremors.

Local hospitals are overcrowded, with some patients being treated in the courtyards. Authorities have sent additional rescue teams, medical brigades, and humanitarian aid to the region. International organizations, including the UN and the Red Crescent, have expressed readiness to provide additional support.

The earthquake caused strong resonance in Pakistan, where tremors were also felt, but no destruction was recorded in the neighboring country. Pakistan’s emergency services reported heightened monitoring of seismic activity in border areas.

The President of Afghanistan issued an official statement declaring August 30 a day of mourning for the victims. He emphasized that the government is mobilizing all resources to assist those affected. A request for international aid to rebuild destroyed infrastructure has also been made.

Seismologists note that the Jalalabad region lies in an active seismic zone. The last earthquake of comparable scale occurred here in 2015, killing hundreds of people. Despite this, preparedness levels remain low, and the population warning system was not activated in time.

The tragedy has once again raised questions about safety in the tectonic fault zone running through Afghanistan. Experts highlight the need to strengthen infrastructure and improve the early warning system to minimize losses in the future.
