Tim Cook: China Is Not About Cheap Labor, but Engineering Superiority
The Apple CEO explained why the company continues to manufacture in China. According to him, it’s not about savings, but technological capacity.
Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the company’s manufacturing presence in China is no longer due to cheap labor. As he emphasized, the main reason is China’s technological superiority in large-scale electronics production.
“China surpasses the United States in the number of highly skilled engineers and specialists required for every level of the manufacturing cycle — from assembly to fine-tuning equipment,” Cook noted. According to him, this factor makes China indispensable for Apple and other global manufacturers.
He also added that China has a unique infrastructure that allows for rapid scaling and adaptation to changes in demand. This includes dense industrial clusters, logistics, and coordination among dozens of contractors capable of executing complex production tasks in short timeframes.
Cook’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions in the U.S. about the need to bring high-tech manufacturing back home. However, in his view, the U.S. currently lacks the workforce capable of delivering the volumes and quality Apple requires.
Apple has previously attempted to shift some assembly operations to India and Vietnam, but critical dependence on China’s manufacturing base remains. Experts note that China’s tech ecosystem, developed over two decades, is unmatched in terms of speed, scale, and efficiency.
