Trump Resumes Nuclear Talks with Saudi Arabia — Technology Transfer Possible
Washington is ready to allow Riyadh to enrich uranium under a civilian program. The deal was previously frozen due to nonproliferation concerns.
The Trump administration has resumed negotiations with Saudi Arabia on a civil nuclear energy agreement. According to The New York Times, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed that Washington is now officially willing to permit Riyadh to use American technology and potentially allow uranium enrichment on its own soil under a civilian nuclear program.
Wright stated that the aim of the deal is to "develop a transparent, safe, and commercially viable nuclear energy sector in Saudi Arabia." He added that the U.S. is open to cooperation with allies who comply with international standards, including IAEA safeguards.
In previous years, negotiations had stalled over a key sticking point — Saudi Arabia’s demand for the right to enrich uranium. Washington had feared that such capabilities could be diverted to weapons development. Now, the White House appears to be softening its stance, signaling a possible compromise in which Riyadh would gain access to enrichment technology under strict international oversight.
The initiative is being discussed in the broader context of the strategic alliance between the U.S. and Gulf states, amid heightened tensions with Iran and growing Chinese influence in the region. Saudi Arabia is aggressively pursuing its energy ambitions and plans to build up to 16 nuclear reactors over the coming decades.
International observers have expressed concern, warning that granting new players access to uranium enrichment technology could upset the delicate balance of nonproliferation and trigger a nuclear technology race in the Middle East.
