According to American outlet Axios, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has issued a firm ultimatum regarding the Ukraine conflict negotiations. Sources close to the talks report that the White House views the current proposal as its final offer — if it fails, the United States will end its participation in future discussions.

The U.S. is aiming to accelerate the conclusion of a peace deal between the conflicting parties. American officials stressed that time for diplomatic efforts is running out. If no tangible progress is made in the coming weeks, Washington will formally exit active peace negotiations and shift focus to other strategic priorities.

In recent months, the U.S. special envoy has held multiple meetings with Ukrainian, Russian, and key European representatives to forge a framework agreement. According to Axios, the U.S. plan includes a phased ceasefire, temporary settlement on disputed territories, increased international monitoring, and specific security guarantees.

However, major differences remain unresolved. Ukraine insists on full restoration of its internationally recognized borders, while Russia demands the retention of current territorial arrangements and the withdrawal of several Ukrainian defense initiatives. NATO's future involvement in Ukrainian security remains another contentious point.

The U.S. has reportedly informed negotiating partners that the window of opportunity is closing. President Trump sees the situation as a matter of strategic calculus: prolonged talks risk increasing domestic criticism and generating costly engagements with little political or practical benefit.

Should the U.S. exit the process, the diplomatic burden may shift to European powers, primarily Germany and France — countries that have yet to establish a unified approach. This may tip the balance toward either a firmer or more conciliatory stance depending on internal EU pressure.

International commentary has begun to reflect this shift. Some European diplomats are concerned that a U.S. withdrawal could weaken Ukraine’s negotiating position and escalate diplomatic tensions.

Meanwhile, Kyiv has avoided harsh reactions. Ukrainian officials state their willingness to continue talks, provided the country’s sovereignty is not compromised. Moscow has yet to directly respond to Axios but reiterates that any peace initiative must reflect the “new reality” in the region.

In this context, Washington’s ultimatum sends a powerful message: U.S. patience is not limitless, and support for endless negotiations without results has worn thin. This may increase pressure on all sides to reach a resolution or face a dramatically altered diplomatic landscape.
