Sudan is experiencing one of the most devastating modern conflicts — a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. Amid the escalation, international attention has focused on the role of the United Arab Emirates, accused of financing and supporting the RSF.

Military sources report that government units have abandoned southern regions, including Darfur, after which RSF militants took control of the territory. According to humanitarian organizations, mass killings and attacks on civilians have resulted in thousands of deaths. Medical services report a critical shortage of medicines, food, and water. In recent days, tens of thousands of people have fled the city of El Fasher alone.

According to analysts, the United Arab Emirates is using the conflict in Sudan to expand its political and economic influence in Africa. One of the key areas of interest is control over gold mines and ports along the Red Sea coast. International studies confirm that most of the gold mined in RSF-controlled territories is exported through the UAE. These supplies provide the RSF with significant revenue, allowing them to purchase weapons and prolong the war.

Experts link Abu Dhabi’s strategy to several goals. First, the Emirates aim to establish themselves in Sudan as an economic and logistical partner by obtaining concessions for gold and mineral extraction. Second, they strengthen their position on the Red Sea coast by controlling transport hubs and maritime routes. Third, through influence on the RSF, the UAE seeks to counter regional competitors — Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Iran — and to curb the rise of Islamist movements supported by the population.

Meanwhile, UAE authorities officially deny providing direct military assistance to the RSF, claiming they only offer humanitarian support to Sudan. However, reports by research centers such as Chatham House and The Sentry indicate the presence of companies linked to Emirati entities involved in gold export and RSF financing schemes. In May 2025, the International Court of Justice refused to consider Sudan’s lawsuit against the UAE on charges of complicity in genocide, citing lack of jurisdiction, but the case drew attention to the role of Emirati investments in the conflict.

Observers note that foreign interference exacerbates the crisis, making it impossible to end hostilities or reach a diplomatic settlement. According to UN estimates, Sudan is experiencing one of the world’s largest humanitarian catastrophes: millions have fled their homes, and infrastructure is destroyed. Without ending foreign involvement and the flow of illicit resources, the war risks turning into a prolonged conflict engulfing all of East Africa.
