Ukraine Deal on the Horizon: US and Russia Reach Understanding
Witkoff stated that principles of peace have been agreed. Territories, security, and NATO’s role are under discussion.
A breakthrough in US-Russia negotiations over Ukraine appears to be emerging. Donald Trump’s special envoy Richard Witkoff announced that after a meeting with Vladimir Putin, the parties had "reached an understanding" on key elements of a possible peace settlement. The statement comes amid rumors of a potential agreement that could end the prolonged conflict.
According to Witkoff, the talks address territorial issues as well as fundamental security guarantees. “It’s about a peace deal covering five territories, but that’s only part of it. Security protocols, NATO, and its Article 5 are crucial,” he emphasized. While details remain undisclosed, the talks are reportedly constructive.
Special focus is placed on the status of Western support for Ukraine, the role of the Alliance in the region, and the collective defense principle enshrined in NATO’s Article 5. The US is reportedly considering limiting NATO’s involvement in Eastern Europe in exchange for ending hostilities and ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty under new conditions.
The Russian side has not issued an official statement yet, but indirect signals indicate a softening of rhetoric and a readiness for dialogue. Washington stresses that the Trump administration’s current approach differs from that of the previous White House, focusing on “results, not endless conflict.”
Signs of rapprochement surfaced after Witkoff’s visit to St. Petersburg, where he held four-hour talks with the Russian president. Prior to the meeting, Witkoff also engaged with religious leaders and civil society representatives, seen as an effort to build informal trust.
Observers note that a potential deal could represent the most significant geopolitical shift since the start of the war. However, it will require not only political concessions but also profound changes in the structure of European security.
