Zelensky Invites EU Leaders to Kyiv on May 9 in Counter to Moscow Parade
Kyiv prepares a "diplomatic demonstration" against the backdrop of Russia’s planned military celebration of Victory Day's 80th anniversary.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially invited the leaders of the European Union to visit Kyiv on May 9. This initiative is presented as an alternative and symbolic response to the large-scale military parade planned in Moscow on the same day to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II.
“This should be a demonstration of diplomatic strength, not militarism. We propose to mark this day not with a parade of weapons, but with unity alongside those who defend freedom in Europe,” Zelensky stated. The invitation is extended to heads of state and government from EU member countries, as well as senior representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament.
Kyiv’s initiative is seen as an effort to exert symbolic pressure on Moscow and to reinforce Ukraine’s image as a defender of European values amid external aggression. Amid the ongoing conflict with Russia and full-scale diplomatic confrontation, May 9 takes on a dual meaning—as a day of historical memory and a moment of contemporary political choice.
Moscow is set to hold its traditional Victory Day parade, which in 2025 marks the 80th anniversary and is expected to be the largest in recent decades. Kyiv emphasizes that the current realities call for a “different approach” to commemorating World War II’s legacy.
Western reactions to the invitation are mixed. Some countries support the visit as a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine. Others remain cautious, fearing further escalation with Moscow. Final decisions on levels of representation are expected in the coming days.
