USA and China Launch Trade Talks in London
Trade talks between the USA and China are underway in London. The goal is to confirm the seriousness of both sides, discuss export restrictions, and explore resuming supplies.
Trade negotiations between delegations from the United States and China have begun in London. The meeting follows a phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The U.S. delegation includes Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The Chinese side is headed by Vice Premier of the State Council He Lifeng.
The talks aim to restore trade dialogue after a period of tension related to export restrictions and the imposition of tariffs. According to White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, the main goal is to confirm mutual readiness for dialogue, ensure a symbolic handshake, and create conditions for easing trade measures. In particular, the possibility of partially lifting export restrictions and resuming the supply of rare earth metals essential for high-tech manufacturing is being considered.
The American side emphasizes the need for structural reforms in China’s trade policy, including intellectual property protection and fair market access. The U.S. delegation is also raising issues regarding compliance with agreements reached in previous rounds of negotiations, as well as concerns over technology transfer.
The Chinese side has expressed its willingness to discuss contentious issues and create a dispute resolution mechanism that would help reduce tensions and avoid new trade conflicts. Vice Premier He Lifeng noted that China is interested in sustainable economic partnership and views the current round as an important step in building stable bilateral relations.
Despite differences, both sides are showing cautious optimism. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the meeting in London would yield positive results. He stressed that he expects "very good" outcomes that affirm the effectiveness of the chosen trade strategy. Such statements are aimed at supporting investor sentiment and stabilizing global markets.
Future steps in the dialogue will depend on the progress of the talks in the British capital. If preliminary agreements are reached, a joint action plan may be formed, including phased removal of restrictions and agreement on the format of future meetings. Analysts view the current meeting as a chance to return bilateral trade relations to a stable format after years of escalations and mutual sanctions.
