Venezuela possesses more than 5,000 Russian-made Igla surface-to-air missiles, President Nicolás Maduro announced. He emphasized that the systems are deployed across the country to ensure its protection against any external invasion.
President Nicolás Maduro made the statement during a public event broadcast on state television VTV, noting that the missiles are in the hands of the national armed forces and strategically distributed throughout the country to secure control over Venezuelan airspace.
The head of state stressed that such an arsenal is part of the national sovereignty strategy. “Every military power in the world knows the strength of the Igla missiles. Venezuela has no fewer than 5,000 of them, deployed in key air defense positions to guarantee peace and security for our people,” Maduro said. He added that the country is prepared for any external threats and will defend its people from military pressure or interference.
The Russian-made Igla MANPADS are designed to engage low-flying targets such as aircraft, helicopters, and drones. Venezuela began receiving these systems in the early 2000s under military-technical cooperation agreements with Russia. The supply of missiles formed part of a broader program to modernize the country's armed forces, which also included tanks, armored vehicles, and radar systems.
According to the Venezuelan Ministry of Defense, military personnel were trained with the participation of Russian specialists. Authorities say that the presence of modern air defense systems ensures the country’s high readiness to repel potential attacks. Units equipped with Igla systems operate as part of national defense forces and regularly participate in joint drills.
Maduro linked Venezuela’s military strengthening to external pressure from Washington, which he accused of supporting the opposition and attempting to destabilize the country. In response to sanctions and diplomatic pressure, Caracas has expanded cooperation with Russia, China, and Iran, receiving military and technical assistance from these countries.
In recent years, Venezuela has showcased new weapons systems, reaffirming its readiness to defend its borders. Military parades regularly display mobile launchers, anti-tank systems, and domestically produced drones. The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the nation’s military policy is defensive, not aggressive.
Experts note that possessing a large arsenal of modern missile systems enhances Venezuela’s strategic deterrence and reduces the likelihood of external invasion. Meanwhile, the country continues to develop its own defense industries and technical centers, gradually reducing dependence on imports.
Maduro stated that Venezuela will continue strengthening its defense capabilities by relying on internal resources and allies. He emphasized that the government’s main goal is to maintain national stability and security despite economic difficulties and international restrictions.
