Technology company Baidu is working on a system that will allow the synthesis of pet sounds into speech and interpret them in a form understandable to humans. The project involves using artificial intelligence to recognize and convert sounds made by cats and dogs into words and phrases. The patent application describes a method in which the algorithm analyzes not only vocalizations but also behavioral signals, body language, and biological data of animals.

The development is based on collecting comprehensive information about a pet, including the frequency and pitch of sounds, facial expressions, movements, heart rate, and other parameters. The collected data is analyzed by neural networks trained on samples of animal behavior and reactions, enabling the system to derive a probable meaning from the sounds. The AI then converts these into phrases reflecting the animal’s emotional or situational state.

According to the developers, the technology can be implemented in various devices, including smart collars, surveillance cameras, and veterinary equipment. It is expected to help pet owners better understand their animals’ needs and conditions, responding in time to stress, illness, or behavioral anomalies.

Additionally, the possibility of integrating this technology into wildlife monitoring systems is being considered. Analyzing behavior and sounds in natural habitats could provide valuable data for biologists, zoologists, and conservation experts. This feature could be applied in national parks, research missions, and population monitoring systems.

Currently, the technology is at the patent and early prototype stage. Baidu representatives state that the project requires extensive refinement, especially in processing data across breeds and individual animal traits. To improve recognition accuracy, large datasets of behavioral patterns are planned to be developed with the help of animal psychologists and veterinarians.

The potential implementation of such systems is attracting attention in the pet care industry, where the market for monitoring and care devices continues to grow. While commercial products already track animal movements, activity, and location, Baidu’s system could elevate human-animal interaction to a new level.

AI experts note that successful implementation will require significant computing power and large-scale model training. The main challenge lies in the lack of a universal “animal language” and the high individuality of behavior. Nevertheless, the idea of a “translator” between humans and pets is seen as promising and may find wide application if ethical standards and user data privacy are respected.

The development also raises privacy concerns, particularly regarding the storage and processing of biological data from pets. Baidu has yet to reveal how information will be protected but emphasizes that security considerations will be prioritized throughout the project.
