The United Kingdom has announced the lifting of its arms embargo on Azerbaijan and Armenia, which was imposed following the outbreak of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1992. The decision to remove the restrictions was approved by the country’s Parliament and formalized in an official statement published on the UK Parliament’s website.

According to the document, the British government no longer considers it appropriate to maintain previous measures restricting the export of arms and military technologies to both countries. During parliamentary debates, representatives of the UK Foreign Office emphasized that the decision was made after a detailed analysis of the situation in the South Caucasus and is aimed at fostering trust, as well as developing economic and defense cooperation between London, Baku, and Yerevan.

The British side clarified that lifting the embargo does not imply unconditional approval for the sale of all types of weapons. Each export contract will undergo individual review and receive approval only in compliance with international law and export control regulations. Special attention will be paid to ensuring that supplied equipment is not used in offensive operations and does not undermine regional stability.

According to British officials, this step is part of a broader strategy to strengthen diplomatic relations with both countries and expand London’s role in the South Caucasus. It is noted that the United Kingdom seeks to act as a mediator in promoting regional stability and energy cooperation, given the strategic importance of the region for oil and gas supplies.

In Baku, London’s decision was met with approval, noting that it opens new opportunities for defense and technological projects with British companies. Yerevan also expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with the United Kingdom but stressed the need to maintain a balanced approach toward both sides.

Analysts believe that Britain’s move could reshape the dynamics of regional interaction, previously dominated by Russia, Turkey, and the European Union. London now intends to take a more active role in ensuring security and integrating the South Caucasus into global economic structures.
