A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul. The tremors were recorded midday and were felt across various districts of the metropolis, causing concern among the population. Eyewitnesses report that the seismic activity lasted for several seconds, causing buildings to shake and triggering panic among some residents.

According to initial data, the earthquake’s epicenter was located near the city at a relatively shallow depth, which amplified its surface impact. The tremors were strong enough to disrupt the live broadcast of Turkish TV channel CNN Türk. Journalists in the studio interrupted the transmission as the shaking occurred, confirming the power of the earthquake, which affected both residential and commercial areas.

Local authorities promptly confirmed that the tremors were registered by seismological stations and that information was being gathered on possible consequences. As of now, no damage or injuries have been reported. However, civil defense services and rescuers are on high alert. Police and medical personnel are inspecting vulnerable areas, including older buildings and major transport hubs.

Citizens who felt the tremors quickly evacuated homes and workplaces, gathering in open areas. Many remain outside, waiting for further announcements from authorities. Surveillance footage and eyewitness videos showing the moment of the quake are being widely shared on social media. Some areas have reported disruptions in communication and temporary power outages, though no systemic failures have been recorded.

The governor of Istanbul issued a statement urging residents to remain calm and follow official instructions. He emphasized the importance of safety measures in case of aftershocks: evacuating buildings, staying away from glass structures and power lines. He also assured that all municipal services are operating in emergency mode and in constant coordination with national rescue services and seismologists.

Experts noted that seismic activity in this region is not unexpected. The Marmara region, where Istanbul is located, lies on the North Anatolian fault line and is considered seismically active. The city has a history of destructive earthquakes, including the catastrophic 1999 quake that claimed thousands of lives. Therefore, any seismic event causes heightened concern among locals and requires prompt action.

It is still unknown whether aftershocks will follow, but experts do not rule out the possibility. Geologists are continuing to analyze the data to assess the likelihood of further tremors. Meanwhile, the Turkish Red Crescent and other humanitarian organizations have prepared resources in case evacuation or assistance is needed.

City authorities urged people not to panic and avoid spreading unverified information. All official updates are published through trusted government channels. Additional safety measures include the temporary closure of some schools and the switch to remote work for certain institutions while the situation is being monitored.

The national emergency agency stated that a complete analysis and updated seismic data would be published in the coming hours. It also reported that none of the city’s critical infrastructure—such as airports, bridges, or tunnels—sustained damage. Air and rail traffic continue to operate normally.
