Germany Considers Reinstating Mandatory Military Service
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that a return to conscription may be possible if volunteer numbers fall short. The Bundeswehr is lacking around 60,000 personnel.
The German government is considering reinstating mandatory military service. This was stated by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in an interview published by ARD. According to him, the decision will depend on how many volunteers are willing to join the armed forces. If recruitment targets are not met, conscription cannot be ruled out.
Currently, the Bundeswehr is facing a shortage of personnel. According to the Ministry of Defense, around 60,000 additional service members are needed to achieve the planned operational readiness of the army. The current reserve force is less than half the target number of over 200,000 personnel.
Pistorius emphasized that the discussion is still in its early stages and is not yet tied to specific legislative initiatives. However, he stressed the need to adapt the army to current challenges and future tasks, including strengthening defense capability and meeting NATO commitments.
The minister noted that voluntary military service remains a priority, but called for an open public discussion on alternatives, including the possible return of conscription. He reminded that mandatory service was suspended in Germany in 2011, but the legal framework remains in place and can be reactivated if necessary.
Within Germany’s political and military circles, the proposal has sparked mixed reactions. Some experts see it as a response to growing external threats and staffing shortages, while others question the relevance and effectiveness of this approach in modern conditions. The potential consequences, including financial costs and the impact on youth, are being debated.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense continues developing reforms aimed at making military service more attractive. Proposed measures include better contract terms, social benefits, and expanded training programs. There are also efforts to strengthen the reserve and recruit more technical and cyber specialists.
A decision to reinstate mandatory service may require parliamentary approval and broad public support. The government plans to assess the staffing situation and present further recommendations soon. A final decision has not yet been made.
