Rafah nearly destroyed amid military operation in Gaza
Satellite images and international assessments show up to 90% of the city’s residential infrastructure has been damaged.
The city of Rafah, located in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, has suffered extensive destruction during the ongoing armed conflict. According to independent analysts and international observers, up to 90% of the city’s residential buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed as a result of Israeli military operations.
The hardest-hit area is Al-Najma Square, once a key civic center before the escalation. Comparative satellite images shared by humanitarian organizations and analytical institutions show near-total devastation of buildings and infrastructure in the zone.
The Israeli military claims its strikes target militants and military infrastructure. However, Gaza’s high civilian population density has led to the widespread destruction of residential areas. International human rights organizations have raised concerns over the humanitarian consequences of the campaign, including the destruction of civilian infrastructure and mass displacement.
According to recent estimates, more than one million people have been displaced since the start of the conflict. Humanitarian access to southern Gaza remains limited, and the scale of the destruction makes reconstruction extremely difficult without broad international support.
