Trump Begins Preparations for Putin–Zelensky Meeting
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the start of preparations for a personal meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. He has already spoken with the Russian leader and reported on his meetings with Ukraine and Europe.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the beginning of preparations for a bilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The statement came after Trump’s talks with European leaders and Zelensky. According to him, as part of this diplomatic initiative, a phone call with the Russian president also took place, during which the prospect of personal negotiations between the parties to the conflict was discussed.
The American president clarified that following the bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky, a separate meeting involving himself is planned. The location of the meeting will be determined later. Trump noted that preparations for all negotiations have already begun, and the parties are actively engaging through appropriate diplomatic channels.
The Kremlin press service confirmed the fact of the phone conversation between the leaders of the U.S. and Russia. According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, the conversation lasted about 40 minutes. During the call, Trump informed Putin about the results of his trip, including the meeting with Zelensky and representatives of European countries. The Russian leader, in turn, again emphasized the importance of direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv and positively assessed Trump’s efforts to promote peace initiatives.
Both sides confirmed the need to continue direct negotiations between the delegations of Russia and Ukraine. They also expressed an intention to maintain contact on the Ukrainian issue and other matters of bilateral and international agenda.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a separate statement, said that during his discussions with Western leaders, considerable attention was devoted to the issue of territories. He clarified that the discussion was carried out “literally on the map” and noted that before the start of the full-scale conflict, less than 1% of Ukrainian territory was under Russian control. According to him, this statistic changes the perception of the balance of power and must be considered when determining the strategic approach to negotiations.
Zelensky also expressed readiness to meet with Putin, stressing that the issue of territories remains exclusively between him and the Russian president. At the same time, he confirmed his participation in diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation and finding solutions leading to a sustainable settlement of the conflict.
The announcement of upcoming negotiations between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, with U.S. mediation, could become a significant step in attempts to achieve a peace agreement. The world’s attention is focused on the prospects of forming a new diplomatic platform with the participation of the key parties to the conflict.
