Wildberries Starts Hiring North Korean Workers for Warehouses in Russia
The company claims the hiring is legal, but the choice of country raises questions.
The marketplace Wildberries has launched a pilot project to recruit foreign labor, starting with the hiring of workers from North Korea. According to open sources, North Korean women are already employed at one of the company’s warehouses in Elektrostal, near Moscow.
The company states that all employment procedures are fully legal — with visas, work permits, and compliance with all migration regulations. It emphasizes that this is part of an “international labor cooperation program,” involving foreign contractors and intermediaries.
Nevertheless, the choice of North Korea as a source of labor has sparked controversy. The country is known for its strict control over citizens abroad and for the state’s centralized collection of their earnings.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly reported that North Korean labor migrants often work under conditions akin to forced labor — lacking freedom of movement, limited contact with the outside world, and constant surveillance.
Previously, thousands of North Koreans worked in Russia in construction, logging, and other sectors, but in 2019 most were deported following a UN Security Council resolution. The reappearance of North Korean labor in a private company of this scale raises renewed concerns about compliance with international obligations.
Wildberries has not disclosed the exact number of workers hired or the conditions provided. Company representatives also declined to comment on whether the program will be expanded to other regions or logistics centers.
