The United Arab Emirates has officially announced the lifting of the travel ban for its citizens to Lebanon. The ban had been in effect since 2021 and was imposed in political solidarity with Saudi Arabia. The decision to lift the restriction was made following a bilateral meeting between the presidents of the UAE and Lebanon held in Abu Dhabi.

According to the joint statement signed during the visit, the two sides agreed to intensify bilateral relations, simplify travel between the two countries, and deepen economic cooperation. The statement emphasizes a commitment to develop partnership ties and establish direct interaction at all levels. The decision was positively received in business and diplomatic circles in both countries.

The original travel ban was imposed in 2021 after a Lebanese minister criticized the Arab coalition’s military intervention in Yemen, led by Saudi Arabia. In protest and solidarity with Riyadh, the UAE, along with other Gulf countries, decided to restrict travel to Lebanon for its citizens. Although the restrictions did not apply to Lebanese citizens entering the UAE, obtaining visas remained difficult throughout the ban period.

Now, with the lifting of the restrictions, the authorities of both countries hope to restore tourism, cultural, and business ties. Representatives of airlines and travel agencies have already begun preparations for resuming direct flights and travel packages. New air routes linking UAE and Lebanese cities are also under consideration.

The Abu Dhabi Development Fund announced plans to send a delegation to Lebanon to explore opportunities for joint infrastructure projects. Priority areas include transportation and energy infrastructure development, as well as projects in water supply and agriculture. The delegation’s visit is scheduled in the coming weeks, after which memorandums of cooperation may be signed.

Experts view the lifting of the ban as part of a broader trend toward normalization of regional relations. In March of this year, Saudi Arabia also announced a review of its restrictions on Lebanon. Saudi authorities stated they would resume importing products from Lebanon and partially ease visa policies for Lebanese citizens. These steps are seen as an effort to stabilize regional relations and reduce tensions.

Restoring ties with the Arab Gulf countries is seen in Lebanon as a vital step toward economic recovery. According to economists, the return of investment and projects from the UAE and Saudi Arabia could boost several sectors in decline due to years of financial and political crisis. Support in construction, energy, and services is especially critical.

Previously, travel restrictions complicated personal and business relationships between the countries. Many Lebanese residing and working in the Emirates were unable to visit home, while potential investors refrained from investing in projects in Lebanon. Now, both sides hope to rebuild trust and strengthen bilateral ties.

As part of the agreements reached, measures are being considered to improve the visa regime, including simplified visa processes for students, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals. Relevant instructions are expected to be sent to the diplomatic missions of both countries soon.

The lifting of restrictions symbolizes the UAE’s intention to resume active cooperation with Lebanon amid a shifting regional landscape. This decision may also serve as a signal to other countries in the region, demonstrating the possibility of moving beyond restrictions and diplomatic disagreements.
